To advocate for Organic Agricultural Products to provide healthier food supply to consumers and minimize environmental pollution by using more organic fertilizers and less inorganic fertilizers and chemical pesticides. This particular advocacy on sustainable Agriculture and Organic farming was inspired by the revisit to our hometown, a small village in the mountains of the Cordilleras. There is not much changes in the place since I left in the late 60s. It is still simple living but the people are happy. There are no resident doctors, medical clinics (let alone hospital nor pharmaceutical drug counters) because probably the populace does not really need them. I’ve met familiar faces who are now in their twilight years yet still tending their fields and does not seem to be bothered by rheumatism and other ailments common to old age.
Farming is the main source of livelihood in this village like the other places in the region. I heard some of their stories that they need to travel miles to go buy chemical fertilizers and insecticides because these help them increase their farm yields. They believe that the fertility of the soil in their farms are used up and that organic fertilizing is no longer enough. I am not an agriculturist but I am aware that inorganic farming can harm the soil and environment that result to less plant yields. Some of the people migrated in search of better opportunities because their farms are no longer profitable to sustain their economic needs.
Modern Science have discovered and are still exploring solutions on increasing farm yields such as seed/plant cloning, biotechnology, transgenic, etc. but these are costly, requires agriculture expertise or for large scale farming. According to studies these new technologies can also cause negative impacts on the balance of nature.
Back to the city, it is difficult to find organic vegetable and fruits. Demands are increasing (more people are getting health conscious) but supply is scarce so Organic Foods are expensive and are not as attractive compared to the inorganic farm yields. I love gardening when I can but city living offers many excuses and inconveniences to raise our own fruits and vegetables. We have public and supermarkets where we can easily source our foods. Due to our busy life styles in the urban areas, we opt for convenience in choosing our foods rather than the nutritional benefits.
There must be a simplier way to raise organic and sustainable Agriculture to make organic food supply more available to us. A better livelihood to the farmers and can offer the consumers with more nutritious and healthier foods. Organics will also protect our environment from Chemical pollutants contributed by chemical farm inputs.
